Appearance

The first thing you'll notice is the spiky brown hair. It's actually natural. It'll stubbornly stay up even if you ruffle it. The second would be those big, blue orbs with the beautiful hue of the sky. Beware, they can be more potent than puppy eyes. And then there's the ever-present bright smile. All in all, it combines together to form a picture of a happy and innocent child. This makes him a magnet for pedos trouble. So if you've got a big brother/sister instinct, good luck to you because it's highly likely this kid will set it off. Vice versa can happen too (you might develop those instincts if you hang around this bubbly boy).

He stands at below four feet; he's actually quite small for his age, which only adds to his vulnerability to one's eyes. Not only that, he's rather thin and lanky, not much fat or muscle. But he's quick on his feet and active, as well as possessing great balance from being a waiter. This quickness was developed from years of running errands for his grandfather and escaping bullies and bad/suspicious-looking people. Clothes-wise, he favors shirts and shorts of the white and primary colours variety. When it's cold, he adds a hooded jacket or a vest to his ensemble. Notably, he wears a crown necklace --- It's one of two mementos from a person dear to him.

Personality

Max or "Maxie" (he's fine being called either way), is a bouncing ball of sunshine and smiles, as befitting his age. He is optimistic and cheerful; his smile is genuine and pure, guaranteed to warm your heart and brighten your day (unless you're an ice block... but even then, you might melt). The brunet is also polite, kind and respectful to elders. He is very friendly, honest, and always does his best.

He's rather curious and adventurous, and always excited to talk to people or hear stories from them. He tends to idolize people he thinks are cool and amazing.

Being a kid, he is indeed innocent... but he's not completely naive. He's aware that the current situation of the world is not bright in the slightest, and both people and Pokemon are suffering... but that's why he has to smile. Because his older brother that he loved so much told him this:

"Even when everything is dark, the smallest spark of light can drive the darkness away. When everybody is sad, smile - be their light and cheer them up."

If you're a stranger, he may be wary and shy at first, but it won't take long for him to be friendly to you. He's very trusting, understanding and sympathetic. He can say some surprisingly wise things about matters of the heart... but then watch him be playful and not understand 1) big, difficult words 2) sarcasm and 3) sexual innuendo, and you'll see that at core, he's really still a child.

It's not all rainbows for this kiddo, however. Those smiles hide a melancholy and longing for a certain missing person: his older brother. He's very good at hiding it though. After all, he's growing up and becoming a big boy, and he's been taught(by his older brother nonetheless) that they don't cry. He also feels that he needs to become more responsible because his grandfather's getting up in age, and since there's just the two of them, he has to step up.

But then, 11 years old is still too young, and a responsibility this big would be overwhelming for such a child. That's why he's still unconsciously dependent on older people, especially older brother figures. In a way, it's to make up for the loneliness and longing he feels for his missing older brother.

History

The Stratos family lived happily and comfortably in Petalburg City, Hoenn. However, when the evil teams began terrorizing the region, Max, then 7 years old, and his older brother were sent by their parents to the Sinnoh region to stay with their grandfather where it was relatively safer until things settled down. Unfortunately for them, things never settled down, and they had assumed that Mr. and Mrs. Stratos died in the tidal wave that engulfed their home region later.

Their grandfather then took care of the siblings in his hometown Eterna City, but soon enough, even Sinnoh began to fall to the evil organizations. Two years after their arrival to Sinnoh, Max's older brother decided to leave one day without stating his reasons. But before leaving, he gave Max two parting gifts: a silver necklace with a crown charm, and Max's new friend, Cloud the Swablu.

Now, two years have passed, and never once did Max's older brother show up since he left. There wasn't even any letter or attempt of communication. This greatly saddened the young boy, but with Team Galactic's return to the city, life had been pretty hard. He stopped going to school, and instead helped out in his grandfather's business: a small cafe. Their one-of-a-kind brewed coffee and pleasantly calming tea were popular enough among locals and well-liked by travelers so they managed to keep business. The Galactics and eventually Immortalis in the city (who made up most of the clientele that could pay well) were regular bullies, but the old man and his grandchild (and the extra helper neighbor who comes by when supplies are delivered and storage boxes need to be moved around) make do with the hard life. As much as they want to escape the oppression of Immortalis in Eterna City, the old man can't travel long distances anymore, due to his old age and arthritis. Luckily, their neighbors were kind, helping out in the cafe when they could. So despite the bleak situation in the city, Max and his grandpa stay.

In his free time, Max goes to the Eterna Forest, which is where he keeps his Pokemon so that the Immortalis doesn't take her away. Cloud doesn't stay in a Pokeball, and lives in the forest. When he's there, he does a distinctive call and whistle to get her out of hiding in the treetops. As the second memento from his older brother, Maxie loves Cloud very much, and so he doesn't mind the difficult situation, as long as she was safe and he got to keep her. He hasn't had much time to train her, and when in the forest, he'd rather play and bond with her.

Suffice to say that Maxie's situation with his two remaining family members has a great impact on his life, but it is his older brother who has the greater influence despite not being present. Max idolizes his older brother very much and they've grown very close in the time they left Hoenn. He walked with Max to and from school, defended Max from bullies, and took care of him when he was sick. That's why his abrupt leave broke the young boy more than he would admit. But even after two years with no sign of him, Max still hopes that one day, his older brother will come back.

And until then... He'll keep on smiling. He'll smile and be the light among the darkness. He'll keep on going even if life is hard right now, because he believes that eventually, the sky will be bright for the entire Pokemon world again.
